What Are the Benefits of Swaddling a Baby?

Updated: Jul 4

Swaddling is a time-honoured practice that has been used by cultures around the world for centuries to soothe and protect newborns. This gentle technique involves wrapping a baby snugly in a lightweight blanket, mimicking the warmth and security of the womb.

But is swaddling good for newborns?

When done correctly, the answer is yes.

Swaddling is not only safe but also offers a range of benefits that support a newborn’s physical comfort, emotional calm, and early developmental needs.

Creating a Womb-Like Experience

Swaddling helps recreate the snug, secure feeling of the womb, providing a comforting environment that can ease a newborn’s transition to life outside the womb. The gentle pressure of the swaddle mimics the close quarters of the womb, helping babies feel safe, warm, and protected. This familiar sensation can reduce stress, calm reflexive movements, and promote a sense of security during the early weeks of life.

Comfort Through Gentle, Soothing Pressure

Swaddling provides gentle, even pressure around a baby’s body, much like a comforting hug or a parent’s touch. This subtle pressure can help calm the baby’s nervous system, lowering cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone.

As a result, babies often feel more relaxed and less fussy. This soothing effect not only helps infants settle more easily but also promotes longer, more restful sleep. And when the baby sleeps better, parents do too, bringing much-needed rest and peace of mind to the whole household.

Minimising Startle Reactions During Sleep

In the early months, many babies experience the startle reflex, an involuntary response where their arms suddenly fling outward in reaction to a noise or movement. While perfectly normal, this reflex often wakes babies from sleep, leading to frequent disruptions and restlessness.

Swaddling helps by gently securing the baby’s arms close to their body, limiting these sudden movements. This snug wrap reduces the chances of startling awake, allowing babies to sleep longer and more peacefully, supporting better rest and development during those critical early weeks.

Regulating Body Temperature

Newborns find it difficult to regulate their body temperature, making it especially important to choose the right swaddle. Breathable swaddles made from natural materials, such as cotton or bamboo, help keep babies comfortably warm without causing overheating.

These fabrics allow air to circulate while still providing a cosy, secure wrap, helping to maintain a safe and balanced body temperature for a more restful and safer sleep.

Soothing Colic

Colic can be incredibly challenging for both babies and parents, often causing prolonged periods of fussiness and discomfort due to gas or digestive distress. Swaddling can help soothe colicky babies by providing gentle, wrap-around pressure that mimics a comforting embrace.

This light pressure can help calm the nervous system and ease tension in the belly, offering some relief during episodes of discomfort. While swaddling isn’t a cure for colic, it can be a valuable tool in helping babies feel more secure and settled during difficult moments.

How to Swaddle Your Baby?

To ensure the safety and comfort of your baby while swaddling, it’s important to follow the proper technique:

  • Lay out the blanket: Spread a lightweight blanket flat on a stable surface, such as a changing table or bed. Fold down one corner slightly.

  • Position your baby: Place your baby face-up on the blanket with their head above the folded corner.

  • Wrap the right side: Gently straighten your baby’s right arm down by their side. Pull the right corner of the blanket across the body and tuck it under your baby’s left side.

  • Bring up the bottom: Fold the bottom corner of the blanket up over your baby’s feet, keeping it snug but not tight.

  • Wrap the left side: Straighten your baby’s left arm down and pull the left corner of the blanket across their body, tucking it underneath on the right side. Only your baby’s head and neck should be exposed.

  • Check for comfort and safety: Ensure the swaddle is snug across the upper body but loose around the hips and legs. Your baby’s lower body should have enough room to move freely.

Important Considerations When Swaddling

While swaddling offers many benefits, it’s essential to follow safety guidelines to protect your newborn’s health and well-being.

  • Swaddling is safest when started from birth and used consistently in the first two to three months. Beginning to swaddle a baby who isn’t accustomed to it after this period can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

  • You can stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of trying to roll onto their front, typically between three and six months. Swaddling can restrict their movement and increase the risk of suffocation if they roll over while wrapped.

  • Additionally, swaddling isn’t recommended if you’re bedsharing, as the baby may not be able to signal if they are too close to an adult or become covered by bedding, which poses a safety hazard.

  • Avoid swaddling if your baby has an infection or fever, since swaddling can raise their body temperature further.

  • Use a muslin or cotton fabric rather than a heavy blanket for swaddling, and avoid dressing your baby in overly warm clothes underneath.

  • Keep the baby away from heat sources like radiators, and never place another blanket over a swaddled baby. Hats should also be avoided when swaddling to prevent overheating.
